August 28, 2026 - The accolades keep coming for the Davenport High School Band, which was selected recently as the 2027 Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) 4A Honor Band.
This marks a first for Comal ISD and for the San Antonio area to have a band win this title in any classification. While a few area bands have placed second, none have won the coveted Honor Band designation.
“I am proud of our students and their commitment to excellence,” says Michael Lehmann, DHS director of bands. “This is just the latest award that showcases the excellence, sacrifices and hard work exhibited by our current and past members and directors.”
Being named a TMEA Honor Band is one of the highest honors a Texas school concert band can achieve, placing it among the most distinguished band programs in the state. Through a rigorous, multi-level evaluation of recorded performances, bands advance through region, area and state rounds of competition with panels of experienced educators assessing musical excellence, artistry and technical achievement.
As the 2027 TMEA 4A Honor Band, the DHS ensemble will perform during the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention on February 11-12, 2027, in San Antonio. Specific concert schedules will be announced later this year. The convention attracts more than 30,000 attendees and serves as a showcase for excellence in music education across Texas.
“We are incredibly proud of our band program,” says DHS Principal Angela Looney. “This achievement is a reflection of the talent, perseverance and character of our student musicians, directors and supportive families.”
In fact, the DHS band program is the largest student organization at the high school which opened its doors six years ago. Today, the Wolf band includes more than 230 students who are enrolled in marching band, color guard, jazz band and concert band classes.
Since 2020, the band has appeared in the finals of the UIL 4A state marching band contest four times, winning a bronze medal in 2024 and a silver in 2025, helping the campus earn the prestigious 4A Lone Star Cup.
Additionally, the DHS color guard has won two Texas Color Guard Circuit state championships and most recently earned the bronze in 2025. The Davenport Wind Ensemble was selected as a national winner of the 2025 Mark of Excellence award, and the band program has earned multiple category wins in the Association of Texas Small School Bands (ATSSB) Outstanding Performance Series.
