February 20, 2026 - In true Wolf pack fashion, this year’s KENS 5 EXCEL Award winner from Davenport High School was surprised when the celebratory sounds of a drumline and cheerleaders stopped at her door. Ready to join in on the celebration, she couldn’t believe that it was all for her.
Math teacher Wendy Nosal was presented with this year’s KENS 5 EXCEL Award along with a $2,000 check from Credit Human by KENS 5 morning anchor/reporter Audrey Castoreno and Credit Human Director Emeritus Ramon Abarca.
“I was genuinely shocked the day KENS 5 arrived at school to present the award. When I heard the marching band approaching, I assumed they were honoring a teacher down the hall — certainly not me. When they stopped at my door and I saw the Comal ISD representatives, the KENS 5 reporter, and the camera crew, I was completely amazed and overwhelmed. This school year has already been full of surprises, and this was one I will never forget,” says Nosal, who has been teaching for 17 years.
Students and colleagues were happy to join in on the surprise including seniors Alana Stanford and Gavin Galicia who know firsthand how well-deserved this honor is for the beloved teacher. They were honored to be interviewed for the KENS 5 segment.
In fact, her students describe her as kind, compassionate and supportive. They know that she cares about them beyond the classroom and wants them to succeed.
“Being awarded the KENS 5 EXCEL Award is truly an honor,” Nosal says. “To be selected from among so many outstanding educators is something incredibly special. This recognition has affirmed the effort and passion I pour into my teaching and my relationships with students. I work hard to create engaging and challenging lessons because I care deeply about their success. It reminds me that the work I’m doing makes an impact.”
Nosal was selected as the DHS Teacher of the Year by her peers for the 2024-2025 school year, and ultimately selected as the Comal ISD Secondary District Teacher of the Year.
