December 12, 2025 - In its fourth consecutive trip to the State UIL 4A Marching Band Contest, the Davenport High School Wolf Band brought home the silver medal, placing one spot higher than last year. Additionally, its percussion placed first in the state.
The 196-member band advanced to the finals at the state competition with its show titled Wanderlust which featured images of wilderness, stars and gold stars representing the guiding light. A large compass was placed on the field to signify how each person constantly finds their way.
“The show stood out to judges because of its design, music and marching,” says Michael Lehmann, DHS director of bands. “The performance stood out to judges because our students had the performance of their lives; all of their hard work since July paid off in a marriage of details executed excellently and emotion that came through a transparent performance and not only communicated but resonated with our audience.”
The Wolf band program is no stranger to success and hard work. In the last four years of eligibility for state competition, it earned the state’s seventh place in 2022, sixth place in 2023 and the bronze medal in 2024, not bad for a program that has only been in existence for six years.
“The program has remained consistent because we have so much support from everyone around us,” Lehmann says. “We are thankful for everyone who has helped us along the way.
During the 2025 marching season, the Wolf Band earned many awards: U.S. Bands San Antonio, first in group 4, best overall effect, best music, best color guard, best percussion, best visual, second place overall in finals and best music of all groups in finals; Comal Classic Marching Contest, first place class 4A, outstanding percussion, outstanding color guard, outstanding marching, outstanding music, and overall grand champion of the contest; UIL Region 12 Marching Band Contest, superior ratings from all three judges, advanced to area contest; UIL 4A Area E Marching Band Contest, advanced to area finals, area champion and advanced to the State Marching Contest; and UIL 4A State Marching Band Contest, advanced to state finals, second place silver medalist and first place percussion.
The band is under the direction of Lehmann; Tyler McClendon, associate band director; Marli Dority, associate band director; and Matthew Sotelo, color guard director.
