December 12, 2025 - The Canyon High School FFA Agricultural Communications team was named Reserve National Champion after placing second in the competition at the 98th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 29-Nov. 1.
The all-female team includes Paige Bedgood, Reagan Hudnall, Erica Mizanin and Addison Wiley, and is coached by CHS agriculture teacher Kaylee Musgrove.
“Their work ethic, heart and resilience remind me daily why agricultural education matters,” says Musgrove. “I couldn’t be prouder of their drive and passion for this organization.”
This event mirrors the work of a professional communications team for a magazine, requiring students to create a complete communications package that includes a written feature story, magazine layout, broadcast segment and social media plan.
It’s important to note that National FFA contests take place each fall but are based on results and qualifications from the previous academic year’s state competitions.
The agricultural communications event develops students’ communication skills and teamwork abilities in advocating for agriculture. Participants create a media communications plan for FFA New Horizons magazine, which includes writing a feature story, designing a magazine layout, producing a broadcast piece and developing a social media strategy.
The event mimics a real-world magazine setting, with individual activities like a writing mechanics exam and team activities starting with a press conference. Students collaborate in a shared workspace to complete their projects. This event provides practical experience in writing, design, broadcast production and social media, preparing students for careers in agricultural communications.
This event is one of many educational activities at the National FFA Convention & Expo in which FFA members practice the lessons learned in agricultural education classes.
