Smithson Valley student named Student Visionary of the Year

May 18, 2023 - Smithson Valley High School student, Alex Smithwick, 16, was named the 2023 Student Visionary of the Year winner for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s South Central Texas Region.

The junior soccer player raised $176,557 during her seven-week philanthropic campaign to help fight blood cancer.

While Smithwick was presented with the award on March 5 during the Student Visionaries of the Year grand finale, she was recognized for her achievement at SVHS on Monday, May 15, with her soccer teammates, parents and administrators looking on.

“I enjoy helping others,” Smithwick said, “and that is why I took on this challenge. I am very fortunate that I do not know of anyone personally who has been diagnosed with cancer, but I have friends who have been impacted by it.”

Smithwick continued a legacy of successful Student of the Year campaigns by SVHS students. In fact, Rangers have been taking the challenge since 2017, and have collected more than $300,000 for LLS.
