G/T Referrals

Current Comal ISD Students:

A student enrolled in a Comal ISD elementary or secondary school may be referred for Gifted and Talented (G/T) services by a:

  • Teacher, counselor, or campus administrator
  • Parent, guardian, or other adult familiar with the student’s abilities
  • Peer
  • Student through self-referral

If someone other than the parent or guardian refers the student for GT services, parents will be notified and asked to submit an additional referral. This must occur in order to give the campus permission to assess the student. 

The referral window for students in grades 1–12 opens during the first week of school. Referrals for the 2026–2027 school year must be submitted by:

  • Grades 1–12: October 2, 2026
  • Kindergarten: December 1, 2026

Throughout the evaluation process, additional assessment will be conducted. After the evaluation is complete, a committee of G/T-trained educators will review the anonymous data and make all identification and service decisions, as required by the Texas State Plan (§89.2(1) TAC). Parents or guardians will then be notified of the committee’s decision by the end of the first semester. 

Services for identified students in grades 1–11 will begin in January. Kindergarten services will begin on or before March 1.

New-to-Comal Students Who Received G/T Services at Their Previous School:

Students who are new to Comal ISD and previously received G/T services should submit their prior G/T identification and testing records to their new campus during registration. These records may include a G/T profile sheet, individual score reports, or other documentation describing the student’s previous identification process.

Once the records are received, a committee of G/T-trained educators will review the documentation to determine whether the previous district’s identification measures and procedures are comparable to those used by Comal ISD. Based on this review, the committee will determine the student’s placement or request additional assessment.

If you are new to Comal ISD and your child previously received gifted and talented (GT) services, our GT Identification Committee will review your child's previous assessment records to determine whether the assessments used are comparable to those used by Comal ISD. Based on that review, the committee will either determine eligibility for continued GT services or recommend additional assessment if needed.
