Comal ISD continues to produce some of the nation’s top academic performers.

This school year, the district is proud to announce 24 seniors received National Merit honors. Smithson Valley High School senior Luke Estes was named National Merit Semifinalist, nine more were named National Merit Commended students, and a record-tying 16 Comal ISD students earned distinction in the National Hispanic Recognition program.

Danville Middle School Head Athletic Coordinator and Football Coach Mike Broaddus made a play that would touch the heart of every fan in the stands at the last home game on October 10.

Kirsten Watkins, who teaches AP English and English III at Smithson Valley High School, was recently selected as a University of Chicago Outstanding Educator Award winner, based on a nomination written by one of her former students.

The excitement of fall was in the air October 9 as Goodwin Frazier Elementary School hosted its annual Heritage Night. The event served as a celebration of New Braunfels’ history, including the smells, sounds and sights of local food, music and dance.

While their anthem song may be “On the Road Again,” their heart song is probably “Imagine” by John Lennon or “What aWonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. As they travel the backroads, highways and creek beds that make up the Comal Independent School District, they offer a unique perspective on education, students and families.

A week before school began, seven Comal ISD teachers sat down with Governor Greg Abbott for one-on-one roundtable discussions about education issues including teacher pay, early education, special education and school finance.

As students and parents prepare for back to school, the Comal Independent School District welcomes its first Director of Safety and Security, Joe McKenna, Ph.D. McKenna is leaving his post as the associate director of research and education at Texas State University’s Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) to take on this new role for the district.

Begun in 1935, Boys State is a unique program that educates future leaders about government, civics, and patriotism in a “learn by doing” environment.
