AVID

Why AVID?

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a 6th through 12th-grade elective course and school-wide support system designed to prepare students for college success. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness, thus encouraging success in a global society.

The AVID course is one in which any student could benefit. AVID is a campus-wide college readiness support system that will work hand-in-hand with core content courses to prepare students for challenging, rigorous work. In the AVID elective class, students engage in writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading strategies to help them master rigorous academic content. High expectations are paired with strategies for success (such as note taking, time management, organization, and goal setting) and in-class Socratic-inquiry tutorial sessions so that students excel in advanced courses and are prepared for the demands of university work. These methods of teaching help students develop positive classroom skills, behaviors, and mindsets that support them in becoming innovators and leaders of tomorrow. AVID students become the model of college readiness.

Advantages:

  • AVID has a proven track record nationwide for both bringing out the very best in individuals and ensuring that they are eligible and ready to enter a four-year college or university after high school graduation.
  • As students get closer to graduating high school, the AVID elective curriculum guides students through the college and scholarship application process.
  • AVID students have the opportunity to develop academic and life skills that they carry with them for the rest of their life.

Students must apply to be in the AVID elective class. AVID Site Teams at each campus review student applications and interview students to determine students who meet the expectations and would benefit the most from the class. Participation in AVID is a high honor that any student would want to attain.

AVID Secondary

AVID Secondary equips teachers and schools with what they need to help these students succeed on a path to college and career success. The power of AVID Secondary is the ability to impact students in the AVID Elective class and all students throughout the campus. AVID Secondary can have an effect on the entire school by providing classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that can be incorporated into any classroom to improve engagement and success for all students. Teachers can take what they've learned at AVID training back to any classroom to help all students, not just those in AVID, to become more college- and career-ready.

We currently offer AVID opportunities at the secondary level. If you need more information, you may contact Sarah King at 830-221-2644 or you may contact the campus directly.
