Safety & Security Initiatives

We recognize that there is not a single solution that will solve all of our safety and security issues, so Comal ISD utilizes a comprehensive approach to safety and security focusing on proactive and preventative strategies to ensure our students are safe.

Below is a list of programs and activities the district engages in to support the safety and security of our students and staff. Each of these foundational initiatives sets the stage for ensuring that the district is prepared for any situation that may arise.

SRP Actions

CISD has adopted the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which provides common language around five protective actions campuses can take when an emergency arises. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by school and district administration and staff.

Visit our Standard Response Protocol page for more information.

Lockdown Alert

You may notice several blue push button stations throughout the campus, as well as blue lights on the ceiling, both similar to what you have seen for the fire alarm systems. The Lockdown Alert System is a faster and easier way for campuses to go into Lockdown mode, meaning no one is allowed in or out of the campus, and all students and staff are secured in classrooms.

Student ID
As a way to increase security and efficiency on secondary campuses, Comal ISD requires all students, grades 6-12, to wear Comal ISD issued identification (ID) at all times. The student ID provides greater efficiency for students when interacting with various district services including the library, cafeteria and transportation. IDs easily identify students from the district and which campuses they attend.

Every classroom in the district will be equipped with an emergency go-kit that can be quickly grabbed during an evacuation or other emergency to provide basic supplies that can assist with immediate needs in an emergency until professional help arrives.

Each backpack includes class rosters; basic first aid supplies, wet wipes and medical gloves; SRP overview poster/procedures; hand sanitizer; flashlight with batteries; vest to identify as staff member; emergency blanket; plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place for hazmat.
CCSO
Comal ISD has a strong and committed partnership with the Comal County Sheriff’s Office, Bexar County Precinct 3, Bulverde Police Department, and other local and state law enforcement agencies to provide school resource officers (SROs) and other law enforcement services as needed. Additionally, members of numerous law enforcement agencies serve on the District Safety & Security Committee to give feedback on new programs and assist in implementing new procedures.
