Boy's Athletics: football, basketball, track, tennis and golf

Football: C.M.S. has an A, B and C teams. Athletes are placed on teams by their size and ability. We try to find a place where the athlete can be successful and compete at his ability level. The C-teams will play their games on Tuesday. 7th and 8th grade C-teams will play at the same site. The 7th grade will play at 4:30 followed by the 8th grade at 6:00. The C-team will play 6 games and a scrimmage. The A and B teams will play their games on Thursdays. The A team will play at 4:30 and the B team will play at 6:00. The 7th grade A and B teams will play at opposite sites as the 8th grade A and B teams. The A and B teams will play 8 games and a scrimmage.

Basketball: In basketball students will be judged by their ability and skill level. The A team will consist of athletes we determine to be the top 10-12 players. The B team will consist of the next 15 best players. Unlike football, the A and B team game days will vary. The A team games will start at 4:30 and the B team games will start around 5:45. The 7th and 8th graders will play at opposite sites.

Track: Track is different than football and basketball because there is no A, B or C team. There is only one team for the 7th graders and one team for the 8th graders. Three athletes participate in each of the individual events and four athletes participate in each of the relays. The events consist of: long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, 100 m. hurdles, 300 m. hurdles, 400 m. relay, 800 m. relay, 1600 m. relay, 100 m. dash, 200 m. dash, 400 m. dash, 800 m. run, 1600 m. run, and 2400 m. run. As you can see, there are a lot of events and a lot of chances to participate. The coaches encourage each athlete to participate in track as part of the off-season to help build speed and running skills, which will help them in their other sports.

Girl's Athletics: volleyball, basketball, track, tennis and golf

There are many sports offered at Canyon Middle School; however there are only three explored in the Athletic class period throughout the year. The school offers volleyball, basketball, track, tennis, cross country and golf. The Athletic class offers volleyball, basketball and track. All other sports are offered are required to meet after the school day due to time constraints and lack of available coaches during the school day.

In class the girls are provided the opportunity to improve on their individual skills in each sport as well as train in the weight room, strength conditioning, plymetrics and endurance conditioning. The girls are also involved in physical fitness testing in the fall and the spring so that they may see the results of their hard work.

The volleyball and basketball seasons have two traveling teams and an in class intramural program. The track season includes four practice meets and a district track meet. This sport is unique in that the fastest times, longest throws, or highest jumps qualify each week for the meets. The district track meet includes the best of all the qualifying meets.
