Computer Applications
Computer Applications was
formerly called Computer Literacy. The class emphasizes the following basics:
word processing, spread sheets, desktop publishing, databases, graphics, etc.
At the beginning of each class the students will warmup with Microtype, a typing
tutor. Each lesson on Microtype will stress the use of the proper techniques in
typing, using the home row keys and reaching for each key.
The
first topic covered during the class will be computer hardware. The students will
learn how a computer works. They will understand what is inside of a computer
and how major devices in the computer work. After the students gain an understanding
of the computer itself we move on to word processing.
In word processing
the students produce documents that range from changing fonts, font sizes, colors
to setting up tables and adding graphics. Spread sheets are covered next and involve
the students setting up rows and columns on the spread sheet. The students will
then add formulas and data to produce a graph or working spread sheet. Desktop
publishing includes items produced to by students to include: business cards,
letterheads, menus, calendars, newsletters, etc.
Web
Basics
Web Basics is an introduction to the web mastering class taught
at the high school level. The students will learn how to set up web pages using
tables, layers, slicing, etc. The emphasis on the class is to develop an understanding
of proper color, placement and page layouts. Some HTML coding is done in the class,
but will only be used to tweak individual sites. In high school more coding is
done as well as other languages such as java script, java, etc.
During
the semester the students will make their own about me website as well as making
up a business and developing a small five page site. As the students make these
websites it is important for them to cite any work that is not theirs and to make
sure that permission has been given to students.
This
student is setting up tables and making links to websites using the Dreamweaver
software. She is also developing her own business logo.
