Some of the ways community contributions and CEF support students in our schools:
Campus Grants The Comal Education Foundation met with school and district staff to gather input on school needs and how the Foundation can be most effective in responding to the budget shortfalls facing public schools. As a result of direct feedback from CISD teachers and principals, the Foundation board of directors approved an expansion to the teacher grant award process, beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, to provide funding to all school campuses and broadened the criteria for funding use to not only fund enrichment projects but include use for basic vital materials and supplies.
Campuses will have available funds based on their enrollment at the beginning of the school year. Campuses will complete a request for funding application outlining their specific need(s), how the funds will be utilized, and how the school will evaluate the impact or effectiveness.
Award amounts and applications will be available during the beginning of the academic year.
District-Wide Initiatives and Curriculum Enhancement The Comal Education Foundation works closely with the Comal ISD to support curriculum goals and enhance student achievement. The Foundation provides financial support for district wide programming.
Teacher Recognition Awards The Comal Education Foundation recognizes teachers in Comal ISD through the Teacher of the Year Program and Teacher Honor Awards. In the fall, KENS Television gives a KENS/Excel Teacher of the Year Award to an elementary school teacher in the Comal ISD. The winner is chosen from nominees from each of the school district’s elementary schools. The Foundation provides recognition to all of the nominees for their accomplishments.
The Foundation provides an excellent way to say thank you to a teacher- with an Honor Award! Parents, students and community members can purchase an honor award for just $20 per teacher. A beautiful wood plaque will be sent to the teacher for them to proudly display in their classroom and have as a lifetime keepsake.
New Teacher Books The Foundation works with the Comal ISD’s Curriculum and Instruction Department to welcome new teachers to the profession and support their professional development. The Foundation provides the book The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher by Harry K. Wong to all first-year teachers entering the school district.
Jan Heckendorn Spirit Award The Comal Education Foundation partners with Communities In School to purchase school supplies for elementary school children in the Comal ISD.
Named Endowments The Foundation accepts endowments for scholarships and grants. With a minimum contribution of $10,000, a named endowment is funded and the interest income from the endowment funds a scholarship or grant award. The Foundation currently has one named endowment under management—the Jan Heckendorn Memorial Scholarship. |
