Council of PTAs Hosts Founders Day Celebration

April 25, 2022 - The Comal ISD Council of PTAs hosted its annual Founders Day celebration to honor the organization’s commitment to students, parents and teachers and to reflect on the year’s achievements with a few awards.

This year’s honorees were nominated for these awards by their campus PTA unit because of their willingness to support the PTA by volunteering, supporting and advocating. Here is a list of the honorees.

Volunteer of the Year

  • Elementary School – Erica Rubalcaba, Kinder Ranch Elementary
  • Middle School – Cristee Swain, Pieper Ranch Middle School
  • High School – Rene Bown, Smithson Valley High School

Community Partner Award

  • Sonia Aguillon, GVTC 

Administrators of the Year

  • Elementary Principal of the Year - Jennifer Smith, Morningside Elementary
  • Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year – Laura DeLaGarza, Kinder Ranch Elementary
  • Middle School Principal of the Year – Aryn Standeford, Smithson Valley Middle School
  • Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year – Colby Evans, SVMS
  • High School Principal of the Year – Jaime Alvarez-Calderon, Pieper High School
  • High School Assistant Principal of the Year – Mark Kershner, Canyon Lake High School

Special Awards

  • Platinum Voice for Every Child Award – This award is earned by campus PTA units which recruit members equal to 100 percent of campus student enrollment. This year, six Comal ISD PTAs earned this prestigious award including Hill Country College Preparatory High School, Kinder Ranch Elementary, Indian Springs Elementary, Oak Creek Elementary, Rahe-Bulverde Elementary and Startzville Elementary.

  • Founders Day AwardMartha Miller, who recently retired from the district and served as the district liaison on the Council of PTAs board for 25 years.
  • Texas PTA Honorary Life Membership from the Council - Daniel Martinez, Comal ISD director of marketing and Comal ISD Council of PTAs President Melissa Howell
  • Student Leader of the YearRylee Day, ninth grade student at Pieper High School
  • Texas PTA Honorary Life Membership from campuses – Melissa Odom, Bill Brown Elementary; Dustin Davisson, Canyon High; Kaylee Sicotte, Church Hill Middle; Juanita Lopez and Amy Martin, Davenport High; Jessica Price, Hoffmann Lane; Nicole Talton, Indian Springs Elementary; Tanie Martin and Brandi Sanders, Johnson Ranch Elementary; Nicole Hooper and Maria Klaus, Kinder Ranch Elementary; Stephanie Melton, Pieper High; Lauren Harper and Jessica Powell, Pieper Ranch Middle; Nichole Keith, Rahe Bulverde Elementary; Jenifer Day and Stephen Hopkins, Smithson Valley Middle; Shauna Douglass and Alicia Warmock, Smithson Valley High; and Rosie Acuna and Vanessa McKee, Timberwood Park Elementary.

For more than 50 years, PTA leaders from across the United States have improved the lives of all students by advocating for them and for their education. Today, PTA has become a network of millions of families, students, teachers, administrators and community members.

With a PTA unit on every campus, Comal ISD is committed to its partnership with PTA and honored to work with the 14,258 members within the district and encourages more to become members and get involved.

-Martha Miller received the Founders Day Award, and Daniel Mendez was given a Texas PTA Honorary Life Membership.

-Pieper High ninth-grade student Rylee Day was named Student Volunteer of the Year.
