Program Description
Mission Statement
The purpose of the Bilingual/ESL education programs is to develop English Language Proficiency in Limited English Proficient (LEP) students for a positive impact on future success both in school and after graduation. The program will foster development, second language acquisition and integration into a successful educational experience for linguistically diverse children.
Bilingual Education Program
The Bilingual Education Program serves students who have a language other than English in their homes and need help learning English. The Bilingual Education teacher follows the District’s policy for language of instruction and assignments, whether it is the primary or second language.
The purpose of the bilingual education program is to:
- Learn English
- Help students with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) master the state curriculum.
- Teach academic English to all participating students.
Instill confidence, self-assurance and a positive identity with the student’s own culture.
English as a Second Language Education Program
English as a Second Language (ESL) is intensive English language instruction by teachers trained in recognizing and working with language differences.
The purpose of the ESL program is to:
- Provide instruction in listening speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending English.
- Use the academic and cultural experience of the student as a platform to provide the appropriate instruction in English.
- Teach language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies using strategies and methodologies appropriate for second language acquisition.
