Dyslexia means a disorder of constitutional origin manifested by a difficulty in learning to read, write, or spell, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and socio-cultural opportunity. –Section 38.003 of the Texas Education Code
Comal ISD has dyslexia screening and assessment in place for students in grades K-12. Kindergarten teachers use a screening tool that measures phonological awareness skills and student reading progress is carefully tracked and monitored in the primary grades. If dyslexia is suspected, referral for intervention and possible assessment is made through the campus GIST (General Education Intervention Team).
Comal ISD employs several Dyslexia Support Teachers who serve students identified as dyslexic at the elementary campuses. Teachers are also trained at the middle and high school levels to meet the needs of dyslexic students. In addition, Comal ISD uses several different computer reading intervention programs which can be tailored to remediate individual skill deficits.
For more information, you may contact the campus principal or District Dyslexia Coordinator, Kathy Williams.
