School Health Advisory Council
BRIEF HISTORY:

The Comal ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) was established during the 2002-03 school year under the mandate of SB 19, Section 28.002 Education Code. The members consist of parents of CISD students, doctors from the community, and leaders from the local health department, agriculture extension agency, Chamber of Commerce, and McKenna Health Link (http://www.newbraunfit.org/), and CISD faculty, administrators, nurses, and counselors.
 

PURPOSE:

SHAC addresses all components of a comprehensive school health program:

  • health education
  • health services
  • physical education
  • school counseling
  • child nutrition
  • a healthy school environment
  • employee wellness
  • integrated community and school programs

The School Health Advisory Council was formed to provide advice and is not part of the administrative structure of schools, nor do they have any legal responsibilities within the school system.


ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • Implementation of Worth the Wait, sex education curriculum for grades 6-12.
  • Implementation of the CATCH program in all elementary schools
  • Employee Wellness Programs, such as Walk Across Texas and Maintain, No Gain
  • Annual Health Fairs
  • Comptroller’s Tobacco Grant
  • Wellness Policy

2006-07 SHAC EVENTS:

  • Taste of the Town Health Fairs:
  • January 23 at Bill Brown Elementary at 3:00 – 6:00 pm
  • January 24 at Canyon High School at 3:30 – 6:00 pm .
  • “Eat To Win” nutrition programs for parents this spring TBA
  • Walk Across Texas February 10 - April 7, 2007

Physical Education Information

Students in grades K-8 receive at least 30 minutes of structured physical activity a day or 135 minutes per week. (page 29 in Parent Student Handbook & Board Policy Manual EHAB)

The Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC) met 4 times in the 2006-07 school year and meets 4 times in 2007-08.

Comal ISD has and enforces policies to restrict student access to vending machines. (See policies BDF and EHAA in Board Policy Manual)

The District and its staff strictly enforce prohibitions against the use of tobacco products by students and others on school property or at school-sponsored or school-related activities. (See the Student Code of Conduct and policy GKA in Board Policy Manual)
