Teacher Retirement System of Texas
Comal ISD participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS). All part- and full-time employees are required to pay a fixed percentage of their paycheck to TRS, with the exception of substitutes and temporary employees. A total of 7.05% is taken out of participating employees’ paychecks to pay TRS, with 6.4% going to their personal account and .65% going to help fund TRS health insurance programs.

403(b) and 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plans
Comal ISD also offers employees the ability to participate in an optional 403(b) or 457(b) retirement program. Any employee can enroll in these programs.
403(b) and 457(b) are optional Deferred Compensation Retirement Plans. Participation is limited to employees of public educational organizations, government organizations and certain nonprofit organizations.
Contributions to these plans are deducted from the employee’s paycheck, which means the employee does not need to pay income tax on the contributions. Also, the employee can build a retirement pool with tax deferred compounding with these plans.
To enroll in the 403(b) plan, go to the website of Comal ISD’s Third Party Administrator for the plan, Crider Insurance Services, at www.criderins.com, and go to Forms > Forms A through M > Comal ISD Instructions and Forms.
To enroll in the 457(b) plan, contact Riata Financial Advisors, at (830) 606-5100, or at www.riatafinancial.com.
