Training at CISD Transportation
The Comal Independent School District Transportation Department is dedicated to providing the best training possible that can prepare our drivers for the road. Our District Trainers conduct regular safety meetings for all of our new and experienced drivers. Our administration provides continuous, year-around in-service training for our 160+ drivers, assistants, and personnel.

All applicants for Comal ISD are subject to criminal check, background history, and random drug testing.

Driver Qualification Training

Applicant drivers begin with completion of a DOT Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Each driver must first complete the 5 part Texas CDL written test at the DPS office. Driver training begins with department orientation and Defensive Driving Skills, taught by an experienced District Transportation Trainer. This training prepares the driver for the on-the-road skills test conducted by a Texas Department of Public Safety evaluator.

Each new driver must also complete the Student Management class , Bus Loading and Unloading, Policies and Procedures class provided by the district. During the first 90 days drivers are on a Probationary period. All drivers must complete the School Bus Certification Course (20 hours) required by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Once an applicant has been hired you will be contacted by one of our district's Transportation Trainers to begin your district bus training.

Bus Technicians Training
Bus Technicians are used on our Special Needs Routes to assist the driver in loading, unloading, and with supervision of students during transit. Technicians are required to receive training in Student Management, Policies and Procedures, and Lift Bus Procedures. Bus Technicians work closely with the Special Needs riders. Training for our Special Needs riders is provided on an individual bases.

Regular Bus Drivers and Special Needs Drivers
Every driver (regular or special needs) must acquire a CDL Drivers license and must complete the State certification class conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety. A Regular route driver is considered a full time employee. Starting and ending times for drivers route vary.

A Special Needs route usually drives an AM, mid-day, and PM run. Special Needs Drivers work closely with the Special Needs riders. Training for our Special Needs riders is provided on an individual bases.

Substitute Drivers or Pool Drivers
Every driver (substitute or pool drivers) must acquire a CDL Drivers license and must complete the State certification class conducted by the Texas Department of Public Safety. A substitute driver is considered an as needed employee. A substitute driver is called in to drive when a regular, special needs, or pool driver is not available to drive a school bus.

A pool driver can be considered a full time employee. A pool driver is needed daily for various routes. Starting and ending times for drivers route vary. For more information about substitute driving call Transportation:
