Are you ready to make money, leave school early, and get credit while on the job? Career Preparation is an occupationally specific, 3 credit course designed to provide an integrated academic training in the classroom and on the job. Classroom instruction will cover occupational skills, critical thinking, creating a professional portfolio, teamwork, communication, ethical and legal responsibilities, time and money management, and entrepreneurship. Employment opportunities include education and child care training, culinary arts, hospitality, interior design, and fashion. Students must provide their own transportation. The student has the opportunity to receive state articulated college credit in approved areas.

Career Preparation II is for seniors who have taken Career Preparation I and want to continue a career path, leave campus early, and make money. CISD offers four paid positions in the elementary schools and second year Career Preparation students are the first to be considered for those positions. Career Preparation is an occupationally specific, 3 credit course designed to provide an integrated academic training in the classroom and on the job. Classroom instruction will cover a more in-depth study of the occupational training; assist in instruction and mentoring first year students. Employment opportunities include education and child care training, culinary arts, hospitality, interior design, and fashion. Students must provide their own transportation. The student has the opportunity to receive state articulated college credit in approved areas.

Experience the excitement of the Food Network at Smithson Valley High School. If you have a passion for food and a craving to learn, you've come to the right place. Culinary Arts is the course for you. Do you see yourself as a chef, restaurateur, food writer, or even foodservice manager or research and development professional? Or perhaps you picture yourself as a baker, pastry chef, cake decorator, or bakery café owner. This course provides work-based training designed to develop knowledge and skills for employment in the area of food production, management, and services. Instruction includes operation and management of foodservice establishments, marketing strategies, quantity food production skills, food presentation and service techniques, and technology applications in the foodservice industry. Each student is provided the opportunity to take the ServSafe Employee Guide® course and test as well as the national ServSafe® exam, for certification. Legal considerations, customer service, career options, and managing multiple family, community, and career roles are contained in the content.

Iron Chef! Chopped! Sound familiar. Experience the authentic simulation of the Culinary Arts industry and the Food Network with an opportunity to extend your culinary training in our on-campus culinary kitchen and dining room or off-campus at approved restaurants, hotels, or resorts. Learn while doing. The Culinary Arts internship practicum will give you an exciting real-world taste of the Culinary Arts industry. Culinary Arts puts you right in the middle of the action in restaurants that includes experience for both back-of-the-house and front-of-the-house learning .This course provides occupationally-specific training designed to develop knowledge and skills for employment in the area of food production, management, and services. Instruction includes development of a professional portfolio, operation and management of foodservice establishments, marketing strategies, quantity food production skills, food presentation and service techniques, and technology applications in the foodservice industry. Each student is provided the opportunity to take the ServSafe Employee Guide® course and test as well as the national ServSafe® exam. Successful completion of these nationally recognized programs entitles the student to receive certificates that can be used for three years before renewal is required.
