Over 65 Tax Exemption

CISD home owners, age 65 or older, qualify for over-65 school tax exemptions. When a patron turns 65, he or she can apply for the over-65 school tax exemptions. Taxes will be prorated at the lower rate for the remainder of the tax year.

One exemption provides a school tax "ceiling or cap" for their home.

The tax "ceiling" limits school taxes to the amount paid in the first year the home owner qualified for the Over-65 exemption.

School taxes will not increase above the tax "ceiling" if the school tax rate or property value increases. Taxes may increase if major improvements are made to the home, for example, a new garage or new swimming pool.

CISD over-65 home owners will continue to receive the district's optional 20 percent Homestead Exemption. This exemption reduces the assessed value of the homestead by 20 percent and further lowers CISD school taxes.

Over-65 home owners also qualify for an additional $10,000 state homestead exemption for school taxes, as well as the $15,000 state exemption all home owners receive.

The public can get information about the Homestead Exemption, and other exemptions they may be eligible for, by contacting the Comal Appraisal District, 178 East Mill Street, Suite 101, New Braunfels, TX, 78130, (830) 625-8597.
