Location
The Comal Independent School District spans 589 square miles of central Texas, including parts of five central Texas counties: Comal, Bexar, Hays, Kendall, and Guadalupe. Within the district are the communities of Canyon Lake, Sattler, Startzville, Hancock, Fischer, Spring Branch, Smithson Valley, Bulverde, Garden Ridge, and part of the cities of San Antonio and New Braunfels. Major highways crossing the district include Interstate 35,U.S. Highway 281, and Texas Highway 46.

Enrollment
Total student enrollment in the CISD is currently about 17,150 in 2010-11. Sixteen elementary schools, five middle schools, four high schools and one alternative school make up the district. Comal Academy provides classes as an alternative education campus and dropout retrieval program.

Accreditation
All campuses in the Comal Independent School District are fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency. Comal ISD's Exemplary schools are Garden Ridge Elem., Hoffmann Lane Elem., Arlon Seay Elem. Specht Elem. and Timberwood Park Elem. TEA Recognized schools are Bill Brown Elem., Clear Spring Elem., Freiheit Elem., Goodwin Frazier Elem., Johnson Ranch Elem., Morningside Elem., Oak Creek Elem., Rahe Bulverde Elem., Rebecca Creek Elem., Church Hill Middle, Smithson Valley Middle, Smithson Valley High.

Registration
Eligibility: All students who reside within the boundaries of the Comal Independent School District are eligible to enroll in district schools. The district does not accept tuition students from outside of its boundaries. Kindergarten and first grade: The CISD offers full-day kindergarten and half-day pre-kindergarten. For pre-kindergarten, morning and afternoon transportation is provided on established routes and at normally scheduled times. Mid-day transportation must be arranged by the parent. According to state law, a child who has reached five years of age on or before September 1 of the current school year is eligible to attend kindergarten. Specific eligibility requirements exist for pre-kindergarten. Children enrolling in the first grade must be six years of age by September 1 of the current school year. Required documents: The following documents are required to register any student in CISD schools: two proofs of residency, immunization record from previous school or family doctor, unofficial transcript or last report card, birth certificate, and social security number (optional). Parents must have custody papers if required.

Transportation
Services are provided for all students. On mornings when possible hazardous conditions exist, school officials will check the roads. The superintendent will inform area radio stations by 6 a.m. Earlier notices will be given the previous day or evening, whenever possible. Parents and students are asked to listen to one of the following radio stations for information: KGNB at 1420 AM, KNBT at 92.1 FM, WOAI at 1200 AM, and KTSA at 550 AM. Also, check this website under the Emergency News button for the latest information. If school class start times are delayed, buses will run approximately one hour later than the usual time. For further information, call the appropriate school. Do not call the Transportation Department or central administration offices for information, because there are not enough telephone lines to handle these calls.
