Campus and District Performance Rating Report Cards

District and School Accountability Ratings

The Comal Independent School District is rated as an Academically Acceptable school district and all campuses in the district are fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency.  In addition, each year many CISD schools are recognized by the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) Academic Excellence Indicator System for outstanding performance.

CISD 2006-07 Student and Teacher Awards

Canyon High AP calculus teacher and volleyball coach Heather Sanders was named CISD’s KENS 5 Excel Teacher of the Year, as well as the CISD secondary teacher of the year. She also celebrated her 200 th career win during the 2006 season.

Congratulations to all of CISD’s secondary-school teachers who were nominated for the KENS5 Excel Teacher of the Year Award. They were: Faylynn McMahon (SBMS), Nancy Lindley (CHMS), George Grams (MHS), Gene Stewart (SVHS), Karen Arnold ( CMS) and Sanders ( CHS).

Amy Mark, a fifth-grade language arts and social studies bilingual education teacher at Arlon Seay Intermediate, was named the CISD elementary-level teacher of the year.

Ken Hall, still the all-time national leading rusher from his high school football playing days in the 1950s, visited the Church Hill Middle School and Goodwin Frazier Elementary campuses to congratulate CISD students for winning the region-wide “Touchdowns for Reading” title three straight years.

Eight students at Smithson Valley High and four at Canyon High earned the distinction of being named AP Scholars. SVHS’ Daniel Beiter, Misha Blizard, Bonnie Blackburn, Canyon Browning, Lauren Davenport, Stephen Miller, Samantha Owens and Candice Zipperer and CHS’ Sally McMenamin, Jeffery Scott Perry, Zach Reeh and Andrew Webb all earned the impressive honor.

Smithson Valley High students Bonnie Blackburn and David Guidorzi attended the NASA High School Aerospace Scholars program during summer 2006, and SVHS students Matthew Evans and Arlo Swanson were selected to attend the same elite space camp during summer 2007.

Canyon High’s two twirlers, Samantha Turner and Allison Hatfield, both qualified for the UIL Texas State Solo & Ensemble.

Canyon Middle students Samantha Bartos, Ashtin Caddell, Ben Culpepper and Katrena Marshall qualified for the Middle School Region Choir that performed in San Antonio. They were under the direction of Susan Bartos.

The Smithson Valley High Competition Squad cheerleaders, under the direction of Erin Birkhead, earned a bid to the national competition in Orlando, Fla. They also finished third at the UCS Cheerleading State Competition at Texas State University in January.

The Comal ISD had 29 students pass the A5 Automotive Service Excellence/Automotive Youth Educational Excellence exit exam.

Canyon High juniors Kenny Mittelstadt (percussion) and Bobby DeLong (trumpet) were named to the Class 4A All-State Band.

Smithson Valley High seniors Elizabeth Cortez and Samantha Salazar were recognized by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program as Scholars.

Smithson Valley High seniors Daniel Beiter, Misha Blizard and Jeffery Deuel were named National Merit Commended students.

Both the Canyon and Smithson Valley high school bowling teams advanced to the state tournament in Garland.

Arlon Seay Intermediate assistant principal Judy Murray was named the Region XIII Assistant Principal of the Year.

Canyon Middle science teacher Stef Paramoure accepted a summer position as the assistant to the NASA High School Aerospace Scholars program director.

Several members of the Canyon High Criminal Justice team earned the right to compete at the state meet with a top-3 showing at the SkillsUSA District 10 contest in Waco. Lynn Hardin, Justine Abel, John Willingham, Morgan Billingsley, Kayla Perez, Mandy Smith, Preston Matocha, Cody Hernandez, and Caitlin Daigle all attended the state meet in Corpus Christi in March.

Canyon Middle student Caleb Connor beat out 33 other students and won the right to represent CMS in the “San Antonio Express-News Spelling Bee.”

Goodwin Frazier Elementary student Wyatt Rose and Bill Brown Elementary student Liam Dolen competed in the National Braille Challenge in February.

The Canyon High Comal ISD Automotive Technology competition team advanced to the National Leadership Skills Contest in Kansas City. Students Samantha Hopkins, Leslie LeMond, Nathan Mueller, Chris Usey, Samantha Hopkins, William Lopez, Jonathan Davis and Cody Parvin, and teacher Kevin Hicks, all advanced to the prestigious competition level.

Smithson Valley High English teacher Cricket Ingraham and Spring Branch Middle gifted/talented teacher Troy Mann were two of only four from the San Antonio area named finalists for the 2007 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award. Both were selected from more than 7,000 nominations and received a $1000 check for themselves and a $1000 grant for their school. Mann went on to win a statewide “Leadership Award,” and took home an additional $10,000 check for himself and a $10,000 grant for SBMS.

Canyon High Air Force JROTC students Gracie Velasquez and Rachael Holderle were among the few selected to attend the Aerospace & Technology Honors Camp at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

The Dairy Products Judging team at Canyon High advanced to the state contest at Tarleton State University. Team members were: Lana Schroeder, Sarena Caballero, Kevin Windecker, Tyler Handrick, and Chase Meneley. They were coached by Glenn Grimm.

Smithson Valley High choir students Melissa Serrano, Cole Cote and Rebekah Kreiger were named to the All-State choir. Their choir director was Perry Dean.

A whopping 28 Canyon High Cougar Band students advanced to the UIL State Solo & Ensemble contest.

Smithson Valley High senior Misha Blizard won the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Award for her significant contributions to the community.

Smithson Valley High students Taylor Mooney, Kourtney Knowlton, Jentry Benke and Ashley Hall won the state FFA Ag Sales Competition contest held at Sam Houston State University.

Canyon Middle students Jordan Milligan, Julia Lewis, Jenna Taylor, Tara Hunter and Clay Chauret advanced to the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair in San Antonio. Lewis placed and Chauret received honorable mention.

The Smithson Valley High Technology Students Association brought home 34 “Best in State” awards and 107 state blue ribbons from the state competition in Waco.

Canyon High senior Tyler Handrick earned an elite honor when he was named a state FFA officer.

Canyon High senior Kevin Windecker pulled off the impressive feat of never having missed a day of school from kindergarten until the time he walked across the stage to receive his diploma during May’s graduation ceremony.

The Canyon High girls soccer team won an exciting first-round playoff game after a solid regular season.

The Canyon High boys basketball team advanced to the Class 4A Region IV finals. The Canyon High baseball team advanced to the regional semifinals.

The Smithson Valley High baseball and softball teams both won early-round playoff games after completing successful regular seasons.

Three CISD baseball players were named to the Texas Sports Writers Association’s All-State team. Canyon High’s J.P. Ramirez was named second-team Class 4A and fellow Cougar Trenton Irwin was named to the third team. In Class 5A, Smithson Valley High’s Jonathan Rosfeld was selected to the second team.
